Morphine (Little Winter Flower)

We gather around your bed
As you lie there
Like we have for weeks,
Like you have for years

Watching you
Lie Lifelessly,
But still Alive

Simple sounds
I know what you mean
I know you want to go
I know why

Another Bolus gets you one step closer
To Peace,
To a World Free of Pain,
Free of this Torture,
Free-
But Free of Me

I hold your hand
As you take your last breathe.
I feel you squeeze tight
As you clench and grimace.
I sense your Life for one last time.

It doesn’t seem real
As I sit there,
Wishing for those weeks,
Those years,
Your voice,
Your touch,
Your sweet embrace

A little red flower buds and opens
In the dead of Winter
And reminds me
That you’re Free
