I saw you today

I saw you today; you raised your eyebrows so I knew you knew me
I’m sorry I was so far away

I saw you today; your breath forced in and out of your lungs by machines
I’m sorry I didn’t get to fight for you

I saw you today; the doctor spoke of medical futility
I’m sorry I couldn’t save you

I saw you today; I held your hand as the life ebbed from you
I’m sorry I couldn’t stop it

I saw you today; I closed your eyes for the last time
I’m sorry that I failed you

Now I see you every day

Agnes, powerful use of repetition and the way you formed the poem into couplets. It is like a litany, a prayer. Wow!
